Sleep Apnea Symptoms Can Be Difficult To Recognize
Saturday, August 30th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedThe warning signs of sleep apnoea are mainly seen in gentlemen who in excess of forty years of age and generally in those that are overweight. These symptoms, however, can emerge at any age in both male and females and are becoming progressively being seen more in children.
The most defining symptom of sleep apnoea is snoring which is hard to spot yourself and usually requires that it be brought to your attention by a sleeping partner. There are various reasons for snoring and the straightforward fact that you snore is not in itself a sign that you have sleep apnoea, however, most sleep apnoea sufferers snore.
The next most obvious symptom of sleep apnoea is undue daytime tiredness. People who suffer from sleep apnoea stop breathing frequently while sleeping and the body’s natural reaction is to wake you sufficiently for you to begin breathing again, but not enough for you to be conscious of the fact that you are being awakened. This of course means that your sleep is constantly interrupted and very light so that you do not get the deep sleep which your body needs. The result of this is that you grow more and more tired during the day.
Left untreated the effects of sleep apnoea start to emerge and you will begin to experience additional symptoms which may include headaches (in particular first thing in the morning), tetchiness and even depression. You may also notice that you are starting to gain weight.
A further less obvious indication of sleep apnoea is an increase in blood pressure which can give rise to several cardiovascular problems. should you be one of the increasing number of people who are now monitoring their own blood pressure at home then you will pick this up fairly easily but, it not, it will not be discovered unless and until you visit the doctor’s office to have a routine physical examination.
One further symptom is that of increasing problems with memory retention and learning difficulties. This is once again not something which is easy for you to notice yourself but others around you may well notice that you are not as fast on the uptake as you once were.
Lastly, a number of sleep apnoea sufferers will notice a drop in sexual function which can eventually lead to impotency.
Any of these indicators in seclusion might suggest almost about any problem that you could imagine. When you start to become aware of these symptoms emerging together with each another then there is an increased possibility that you have sleep apnoea and you should discuss this with your practitioner and consider being tested for sleep apnoea.
