Memory loss is an extremely common problem for people of all ages but more so for the elderly. Presently there is a range of treatments that help memory loss sufferers deal with their condition. Other treatments are also available to help prevent a persons memory loss from further deteriorating. As you can imagine there are a wide range of situations that bring on memory loss and one of them is the frequent use of certain prescription drugs.

Lipitor and Memory Loss

It has been recently discovered that a commonly used prescription medicine called ‘Lipitor’ does in fact cause memory loss conditions. Lipitor is a drug that is often prescribed to people suffering from high levels of cholesterol. In treating high cholesterol the drug is designed to block an enzyme in the liver that makes cholesterol. By stopping the liver from over producing cholesterol the body survives on using the cholesterol found in the bloodstream.

The connection between Lipitor and Memory Loss has been proven in that around one in fifty users of Lipitor typically complain of experiencing some degree of memory loss, and this can be short or long term memory loss or a combination of both. While the percentage of Lipitor users complaining of memory loss is not excessively high, it is however sufficiently high enough to raise alarm.

While the vast majority of patients who have been prescribed Lipitor do not experience memory loss the others who do react can experience anywhere from very mild to extremely severe side effects as a result of taking the drug. To date there has not been a great deal of extensive research carried out to further explore the link between Lipitor and memory and what studies have been carried out do confirm a link.

Lipitor and memory loss is only one of a number of examples where prescription drugs have been found to have a link to patients suffering from memory loss. So if you are currently taking prescription medicines and you have also noticed that you are having problems with your short or long term memory it is vitally important that you consult with your doctor to determine if there is a connection with the particular drugs you are taking.
