Need to remember a list of things to pick up at the store and you don’t have pen and paper to write them down? Not to worry - I’m going to teach you a system of memorizing lists that will change the way you think.

It’s called the memory peg system. This system is a technique in which you pre-memorize a simple list of words that rhyme or are associated with a number. This list is always the same, so you can use it over and over with random sets of things you need to remember.

Memorize this simple list of 10 peg words first. When you learn them, say, “One run, Two zoo,” and so on.

  1. run
  2. zoo
  3. tree
  4. door
  5. hive
  6. sick
  7. heaven
  8. gate
  9. wine
  10. den

Now you associate a picture with each peg. You can make up your own picture associations. These are just examples.

  1. run. Picture the object on a horse RUNNING down your street.
  2. zoo. Picture the object being tossed about between 2 MONKEYS AT A ZOO.
  3. tree. Picture the object hanging from a TREE in your yard.
  4. door. Picture the object going around and around in a revolving DOOR.
  5. hive. Picture the object flying out of a BEEHIVE.
  6. sick. Picture the object in a HOSPITAL BED in your living room with a huge needle holding it in the middle of the bed.
  7. heaven. Picture the object tumbling down a STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN.
  8. gate. Picture the object swinging on the top of a GATE.
  9. wine. Picture the object sitting in a huge WINE GLASS.
  10. den. Picture defending yourself with the object in front of a LION’S DEN.

Here’s how you can use this system to remember a list of items to pick up at the store:

  1. Loaf of bread. Picture a horse running down the street with a loaf of bread on his back.
  2. Bottle of Advil. Picture 2 monkeys at the zoo tossing a bottle of Advil back and forth.
  3. Paper towels. Picture rolls of paper towels hanging all over a tree in your yard.
  4. Dog food. Picture a 40-lb bag of dog food stuck in a revolving door going around and around.
  5. Eggs. Picture lots of eggs flying out of the beehive.
  6. Shredded Wheat. Picture a box of Shredded Wheat with a huge needle stuck in the middle of it pinning it to a hospital bed.
  7. Bagels. Picture dozens of bagels bouncing down a stairway coming down from heaven.
  8. Pineapple juice. Picture a huge can of pineapple juice sitting on top of a gate swinging back and forth.
  9. Bananas. Picture bunches of bananas piled in a huge wine glass.
  10. Bounce sheets. Picture in front of a lion’s den defending yourself with a box of Bounce sheets.

And, now you can remember multiple lists and lists with a large number of items. Give it a try!
